Birmingham City boss Chris Davies is coming in for criticism from sections of the support due to their poor recent form.

Birmingham City suffered a third Championship defeat in a row when they were beaten by Charlton Athletic 1-0 on Saturday, which left their play-off dreams hanging by a very small thread.

After serious investment into the squad over the past four transfer windows, there was an expectation that Blues could push for promotion despite only winning League One last season.

However, they now trail the top six by eight points, and they have played one game more than many of their fellow play-off hopefuls, meaning it's likely another second tier season in 2026-27 for Chris Davies - if he's still in his job.

Chris Davies backed to turn things around at Birmingham City

It’s perhaps no surprise that boss Chris Davies is coming under pressure from sections of the support, with songs criticising the style of play heard from the away end at The Valley last time out.

Yet, speaking on the NTT20 podcast, EFL pundit George Elek explained that he felt those questioning Davies were ‘harsh’ in their assessment, as he backed the ex-Spurs coach to learn from this experience and to come good in the long-term.

I think the fans are starting to lose faith in Chris Davies pretty quickly," Elek said.

"I think it’s probably harsh. I’d argue that he should probably be given some time to kind of mature and understand the surroundings a bit better and build for next season.

Given what Davies has already achieved last season in League One, it’s pretty clear there’s a good manager or good coach in there. I wouldn’t be in too much of a rush to sack him.”

Chris Davies should still have credit in the bank at Birmingham City for stunning League One

There’s no denying that recent results have been hugely disappointing for Blues, and the reality is that they are going to need to have a brilliant end to the season to finish in the play-off places.

When you consider the money that the ambitious US owners have put into Birmingham, as well as their plans for the future, it will be seen as underachieving.

They were aggressive in January in the expectation that the club would kick-on again, but, so far, those new recruits haven’t made the impact many expected.

You can understand why fans are frustrated, but you can also see Elek’s point here, and it’s worth remembering that Davies does have a lot of credit in the bank considering the work he did last season.

Blues didn’t just win promotion, they broke EFL records, and they did it with a clear style of play that was good to watch.

In truth, this is his first real blip since taking over, and it’s at times like this that Davies would feel he deserves backing and support from all those connected to the club.

Obviously, if Blues don’t turn things around, then discussions will take place about his future, but there are still ten games to go, and even if the team doesn't make the top six, a positive run could convince Tom Wagner that Davies deserves a chance going into next season.

So, it will be an interesting final few months of the season, but the only concern for Davies will be getting back to winning ways when Birmingham welcome QPR to St. Andrew’s on Wednesday night.
