A left-back and a right-winger are all that remain on FLW's Blues fan pundit's wishlist for the summer transfer window
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Birmingham City's summer transfer window has been nothing short of successful, and with just over two weeks remaining until it slams shut, there is little to do to bolster the squad.
Eleven new faces have arrived through the door at St Andrew's this summer, including star striker Kyogo Furuhashi, Demarai Gray, and the likes of Tommy Doyle, Eiran Chashin and James Beadle on loan.
Jason Moore, FLW's Blues fan pundit, feels that two positions still need to be bolstered between now and September 1st's deadline, a left-back to back up the impressive Alex Cochrane, and a right-winger. Moore specifically singled out Jamal Lewis and David Brooks in these positions.
As has been the case with Birmingham this summer, the players put forward have top-level experience under their belt, and there's an air of expectation that they'd be able to get them both over the line by the end of the window.
"For me, we're a couple of positions off from having an absolutely ridiculous window and squad," Moore opened, when asked by Football League World which two players he'd like to see his Blues side sign before the end of the window.
"We're lacking left-back cover because Lee Buchanan is out for the season," he said.
Buchanan, who played 32 times in Birmingham's last Championship season in 2023/24, only lined out three times last year. He began the season injured, and then was forced off early against Blackpool last December with a "severe" knee injury.
Cochrane impressed throughout last season, but lacks competition in his position currently.
"Left-back cover, I'd go with one of two. Either Brandon Williams or my preferred option, Jamal Lewis," Moore said.
"Lewis hasn't got a club, he'd provide great cover whilst Buchanan is out, and he's got Premier League experience, so he'd be a no-brainer."
The Northern Irish international left Newcastle United at the end of his contract this summer, after spending the last two seasons on loan at Watford and then Brazilian side São Paulo. He hasn't played in the Premier League since May 2023, but has impressed in the top flight previously with the Magpies and Norwich City before that.
"If you can get him motivated, he'd be a great cover."
"Unless Chris Davies has something planned, we are severely lacking in the wing department, and I think I've said my go-to right-winger in the past already, but David Brooks is exactly what we need," Moore added.
In a previous interview with Football League World, Moore highlighted Brooks alongside Jesurun Rak-Sakyi as potential wide options. Now, he has his sights set on the Welshman.
"The way that we play, our right backs become our right-wingers in transitions, so the winger steps inside.
"Gray did that against Ipswich, but you can tell that he wants to go on the outside and take on his man, whereas Brooks would be a perfect winger who could come in and play the number 10 role.
"He'd be what Kieran Dowell was for us last season on the right, just ten times better, and that's with the greatest respect to him."
Last season, Dowell contributed five goals and four assists in 19 games throughout the second half of the season whilst on loan from Rangers. The Blues lost just once with him in the side, as he gave them the boost needed to break the League One points record.
With the 27-year-old back in Scotland, Brooks could be a perfect replacement. The Welshman made just nine Premier League starts last season and was recently sent out on loan to the Championship in the 2023/24 campaign, helping Southampton achieve promotion via the play-offs.
"With his left foot, coming in off the right, he'd suit our style to a t," Moore said.
