One of Rovers' key men could be set to leave Ewood Park after two seasons with the Championship club

Blackburn Rovers could be on the lookout for a new goalkeeper, following a fresh report confirming that Balazs Toth could be on his way from Ewood Park.

The 2025-26 season wasn't a successful one for Blackburn Rovers. They ended it in 20th place in the Championship, just five points above the relegation places, and amid growing unrest at the ownership of the club's long-time owners, Venky's London. Manager Valerien Ismael only lasted until the start of February, before being replaced by Michael O'Neill until the end of the season.

One of the rays of sunshine to emerge from an otherwise disappointing season was goalkeeper Balazs Toth. He'd signed for the club from the Hungarian side Fehérvár in the summer of 2024, and a string of impressive performances throughout a 2025-26 season also saw him called up to the Hungary national team squad.

Toth signed a three-year contract when he joined Rovers, but even though there remains a year left to run on that contract, it's now looking as though the goalkeeper could be on his way from Ewood Park before the closure of this summer's transfer window.

Reporting on Patreon on Sunday morning, journalist Alan Nixon has suggested that Balazs Toth could soon be leaving Ewood Park following a breakdown in talks over a new contract for the 28-year-old goalkeeper.

Nixon confirms that the goalkeeper has turned down the offer of a new contract with Blackburn Rovers, and that the club are therefore keen to cash in on him as he heads into the final year of his contract with them.

He also advises that Rovers will be taking bids for him in both the summer transfer window and in January, and that Toth will therefore remain their first-choice goalkeeper until then as they seek to keep his valuation at the highest level that they can.

But this Rovers fan couldn't see much of a reason why Toth would want to stay at Blackburn, given the way his club has been run in recent years.

The 2025-26 season was a successful one for Balazs Toth on a personal level, even if it was somewhat less so for his club. He earned his first full international cap when he played 58 minutes of their game against Azerbaijan in June 2025. He's now gone on to make six appearances in goal for his national team.

Toth had an injury-disrupted season for Blackburn, missing two months in November and December with a knee injury which required surgery. Other than that, though, he made 34 appearances for them last season and kept eight clean sheets as Rovers battled to maintain their Championship status.

With a year to run on his contract, though, all indications suggest that Blackburn have failed to persuade him to stay, and this puts the club in a difficult position.

The transfer fee that they can command for Toth will depreciate quickly as the final year of his contract runs down. Should they be unable to sell him before the January transfer window, they would only be looking at being able to recoup a fraction of his true value, since any interested buyer would only have to wait a few months before snapping him up for nothing.

With just a couple of weeks left before the start of the 2026-27 season, Blackburn would likely revert to previous goalkeeper Aynsley Pears in the event that Toth leaves soon. But Pears was dislodged from the first-team by Toth, and Rovers fans would be unlikely to consider his return to be an upgrade on a departing Toth in any way whatsoever.

Interest in the goalkeeper has been reported to come from the Premier League, with Everton having been connected with a possible move for him, though this would surely be as back-up for England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Bournemouth have also been linked with interest in him.
