Bombshell transfer disaster: Liverpool and Richard Hughes on the brink already

Liverpool are on the brink of a nasty transfer failure. Where would they turn from here?

Liverpool simply have to get this transfer window correct after a ridiculous season that saw them spend over £400m and go backwards. But it doesn't appear that they're getting off to the best start.

The 'big' signing will almost certainly come on the wing, with Liverpool needing serious output from wide positions after Mohamed Salah's exit. Not exactly an easy task.

Three names, per the Daily Mail among others, keep popping up: Anthony Gordon, Bradley Barcola and Yan Diomande. All three are incredibly difficult to sign and would cost close to €100m.

Reports in Spain from Mundo Deportivo, though, suggest Liverpool have made a 'strong' approach for Gordon in recent days. That's significant as any major move for the Scouser essentially rules out a similar spend on either Barcola or Diomande.

Thus you can take that approach as Liverpool 'choosing' Gordon. That could simply be preference, or it could be because he's the attainable one. We can't be sure just yet.

The massive blow, then, is that he's apparently picked Barcelona and wishes to move there. This would be a disaster, potentially leaving Liverpool without any of the wingers they're aiming for.

In that scenario, where neither Barcola nor Diomande are 'backup' options, Liverpool could be left gambling on a lower-profile player to replace Salah. And that doesn't sound like the situation that will turn things around in 2026.

Anthony Gordon: Situation Summary

Newcastle Campaign and Stats

As of 27 May 2026, Anthony Gordon is heavily tipped to leave Newcastle United following a turbulent end to the season. The 25-year-old winger enjoyed a highly productive campaign, netting 17 goals across all competitions—including 10 in the Champions League, where he famously scored a historic hat-trick against Qarabağ. However, as transfer rumors intensified, Eddie Howe omitted him from the squad for Newcastle's final six Premier League matches, including a season-ending 2–0 defeat to Fulham on 24 May.

Transfer Tug-of-War

A massive European bidding war has erupted for Gordon, whom Newcastle value at roughly £75 million. Fabrizio Romano confirmed today that Spanish champions Barcelona have entered direct club-to-club talks with Newcastle, with sporting director Deco reportedly swaying the winger to prioritize a move to Camp Nou. Barcelona face stiff competition from Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich—who previously agreed to personal terms with Gordon but stalled on the transfer fee—as well as long-term admirers Liverpool.
