Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt square off in a Bundesliga encounter on Friday, marking both teams’ opening fixture of 2026.
Borussia Dortmund wrapped up 2025 with a solid 2-0 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach on December 19th, their final outing of the year.
Sitting nine points behind table-toppers Bayern Munich, the Black and Yellows boast an eight-match unbeaten run in the Bundesliga, their sole loss this campaign being a 1-2 defeat to Bayern.
Dortmund are dealing with squad issues ahead of the game. Their number one keeper, Gregor Kobel, cut short the Marbella training camp due to sickness, putting his availability for Friday in question. Should Kobel miss out, reserve Alexander Meyer steps in, despite his last appearance being back on November 11th.
Defensively, Aaron Anselmino could be closing in on recovery, as coach Niko Kovac anticipates the youngster’s availability by the weekend, alongside Waldemar Anton who is also set to feature again after recovering from an injury.
Pascal Groß completed his move to Brighton & Hove Albion on January 5th, but Kovac dismissed plans for a replacement, declaring: “We are well set up with Jobe, Felix, Sabi, and also Salih. We won’t be doing anything more in this position.”
Possible Borussia Dortmund starting XI: Meyer; Anton, Can, Schlotterbeck; Ryerson, Sabitzer, Nmecha, Svensson; Adeyemi, Brandt; Guirassy
The match will kick off at 7:30pm BST on Friday, 9th January.
In the UK, the fixture airs live on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website under the Friday-night Bundesliga coverage.
