According to Diario Do Peixe, Santos are still due about R$45 million from Botafogo for Jair and John, covering unpaid instalments from 2024 and 2025 plus add-ons and retained rights.

The bulk relates to Jair. Botafogo owe about R$35.8 million, with R$19.8 million due within 12 months. This includes R$16.5 million in economic rights and R$3.4 million from the 10% stake Santos kept.

Jair joined in January 2025 for between €12 million and €14 million, in a deal that sent Tiquinho Soares to Santos. Months later Botafogo sold him to Nottingham Forest. Santos kept 10% and benefited from FIFA solidarity on the Premier League transfer.

For goalkeeper John, Botafogo still have around R$ nine million to pay, due in the short term. Roughly R$7.7 million is from a 25% sell-on after his move to Europe, with R$1.3 million tied to bonuses.

John signed permanently in January 2024 for about one and a half million dollars, near R$ eight million, with 75% of his rights bought. He impressed in the 2024 Libertadores and Brasileiro titles, then joined Nottingham Forest in August 2025 for about eight million euros.

Santos were pursuing late payments in August 2025. In March 2026 the clubs explored using a move for midfielder Newton to offset part of the debt. Santos proposed buying 70% for about three million euros, roughly R$18 million, with a full offset, but Botafogo rejected it, sought extra compensation, and talks ended as the window closed on 27 March.
