Bournemouth welcome Ruben Amorim’s beleaguered Manchester United side to the south coast this Sunday afternoon.

United are balancing this match with preparations for the first leg of their Europa League semi-final. The Red Devils travel to Bilbao to face Athletic Club on Thursday night.

Amorim disclosed some concerning news on the availability of Diogo Dalot in his pre-match press conference. The full-back is suffering with a calf problem that will rule him out for the next few weeks. It’s a hammer blow for the club as Dalot is expected to miss both legs of their European semi-final.

Amad and Matthijs de Ligt are approaching a level of fitness that would allow them to train with their teammates. A foot injury has limited the Dutchman’s minutes in recent weeks while Amad is projected to return soon, several weeks ahead of schedule. Lisandro Martinez and Joshua Zirkzee will not feature again this season.

Ruben Amorim is expected to rotate once again and offer an opportunity to some of the academy prospects. Tyler Fredericson and Harry Amass both played the full match in the 1-0 home loss to Wolves.

Bournemouth still have a faint glimmer of hope for European football next season as they lie just two points adrift of eighth, which may be enough to qualify for the Uefa Europa Conference League.

Lewis Cook was only fit enough to make the bench last weekend while fellow midfielder Ryan Christie is out for months after undergoing groin surgery. Turkish strike Enes Unal also won’t appear again this season.

Bournemouth’s early season promise has faded away in 2025 with only one win out of their last 10 matches. Last weekend, they failed to break down Crystal Palace, despite having a player more for over half of the contest.

They have also fell to home defeats to Brentford, the freshly-relegated Ipswich Town and Manchester City. Worryingly, in that block of 10 games, the Cherries have dropped seven points from winning positions. Andoni Iraola will be frantically searching for the answers to eradicate that frustrating statistic.

On Friday night, the club announced they had entered a binding contract to acquire the Vitality Stadium. This would allow the South Coast club to expand the stadium, with plans in place to double its capacity.

Manchester United’s performances and results suggest they are fully focused on the Europa League.

Following their extraordinary 5-4 comeback win in the Europa League quarter-final against Lyon, a lacklustre performance saw them lose at home to Wolves.

Pablo Sarabia’s 77th minute free-kick was the difference last weekend and it was another game which United failed to score in. On 13 occasions this season, the Red Devils haven’t been able to breach their opposition’s net.

Only Everton and the three relegated teams have managed to score less goals than United’s 38 in this league campaign.

Ruben Amorim and his players travel to Bilbao on Thursday night, which may affect their performance in Bournemouth.

Last Meeting: Manchester United 0-3 Bournemouth, Premier League, 22nd December 2024

An accomplished performance from Bournemouth resulted in them cruising to a 3-0 victory at Old Trafford.

Following an encouraging start, the Cherries broke the deadlock just shy of the half hour mark. United’s fragility from set-pieces was exposed once again as Ryan Christie’s free-kick picked out Dean Huijsen. The highly-rated youngster was afforded the time and space to direct a header into the far corner. Andre Onana was stranded, Old Trafford was speechless.

Bruno Fernandes then had a glorious opportunity to equalise but was thwarted by Kepa Arrizabalaga. The United skipper was unselfishly teed up by Kobbie Mainoo and his subsequent attempt was at a good height for the goalkeeper.

Shortly after converting at one end, Huijsen was fortunate not to inadvertently score  in his own net. Amad’s dangerous corner caused issues for the Cherries defence and, unbeknownst to the defender, the ball ricocheted off his body and just wide of the post.

Andoni Iraola’s half-time team talk worked wonders as Bournemouth rediscovered their rhythm. Justin Kluivert skipped past Noussair Mazroaui on the hour mark before being scythed down by the defender inside the box. It was a simple decision for Craig Pawson as the referee pointed straight to the spot. Kluivert sent Onana the wrong way from 12 yards to double the advantage.

The confident visitors were cutting through their opposition at will. Within two minutes of Kluivert’s penalty, Antoine Semenyo swept in their third of the afternoon.

Similarly to Kluivert moments earlier, Dango Ouattara raced into the area and got to the by-line. His precise pass was straight into the path of the onrushing Semenyo and the Ghanaian made no mistake with his finish.

United couldn’t muster a response and fell to a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth for the second year running.
