James Milner has announced his retirement from professional football.

The player said in a post that it felt the right time to end his playing days after 24 seasons in the Premier League. He recalled debuting for Leeds at 16, becoming the division’s youngest scorer, then coming back after being unable to lift his foot last year to help Brighton qualify for Europe for the second time in their history at 40.

Born in Wortley, Milner came through the Leeds ranks as a winger and made his senior debut in November 2002. He spent two years around the first team, then joined Newcastle United following Leeds’ relegation.

He later represented Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton, and had a loan at Second Division Swindon Town. He won three Premier League titles and a Champions League, plus multiple domestic cups. This season he became the Premier League’s record appearance-maker with 658 games.

Milner reflected on representing England at two European Championships and two World Cups, and on friendships made across the game. He thanked owners, staff, coaches, team-mates and supporters at every club, along with his family for their sacrifices. He leaves the game with pride, gratitude and memories to last a lifetime.
