Brais Méndez has ended his four-season spell at Real Sociedad, joining MLS side Columbus Crew. The club said on Thursday that the midfielder will continue his career in the United States.
Méndez has featured less in recent months, yet he departs with an emotional message to supporters. He thanked them for embracing him from day one and leaves with two Donostia-born children who will ensure Donostia also feels like home.
Among his standout moments were a penalty at Old Trafford, a strike against Inter at Anoeta and a goal at Da Luz against Benfica in the Champions League.
In a farewell letter on social media he described his time in San Sebastián as magical, capped in Seville on 18 April when the club lifted a fourth Cup at La Cartuja. He also praised the people of the club and city, and thanked those who showed him what Real is about.
The former number 23 expressed gratitude to staff who work out of the spotlight, calling their daily support wonderful.
He reflected on a close bond with team-mates, appreciating how they made life easy for him and his family through days at Zubieta, trips, camps and matches. He signed off with a Basque salute, “Eskerrik asko eta AUPA REAL!”
