Gonzalo Plata’s future at Flamengo remains uncertain, and former vice-president of football Marcos Braz, who signed him in 2024, has defended the winger while suggesting a conditional route forward for the club.
“He goes into a final and scores a hugely important goal in the Copa do Brasil. But if Flamengo feel there are external aspects that cannot be controlled or remedied, Flamengo have to wait for the World Cup and go to the market to address what needs help. To say he lacks technical or tactical quality, that he is a peladeiro, I think that is very unfair,” said Braz, speaking to Paparazzo Rubro-Negro.
Plata had been among Filipe Luís’s preferred options in his tactical set-up. Since the coach’s departure, the Ecuadorian has not enjoyed a run under Leonardo Jardim.
In Jardim’s initial assessment, Plata fell short in some tactical areas and needs greater concentration. He was omitted from the squad for the match against Corinthians for technical reasons.
There is now doubt over whether Plata will remain in the squad for the rest of the season. For now, the tendency is for him to be included on Flamengo’s list of negotiable players in the next transfer window.
Amid the uncertainty, Plata is on Ecuador duty for March’s FIFA friendlies. He will then return to Flamengo seeking to regain his place in Jardim’s side.
