When Enzo Fernandez came off after 83 minutes of a man of the match performance against Wolves, we assumed it was just fatigue that caused the change. But it seems there’s something more behind it.

Speaking to ESPN after the game, the midfielder revealed that he had asked to be taken off because his ongoing knee problem was causing him pain. He explained that he’s also decided not to go on international duty this coming fortnight so he can rest and be in better shape for the end of the season – and the subsequent World Cup.

“I have been speaking to the medical team [of the Argentina national team] because I’ve been dealing with a knee problem for four months. I’ve had a bone bruise which has got worse in the last few weeks after playing so many games. Together we took the decision that I should rest these two weeks, knowing how important what comes at the end of the season is.”

That’s fantastic news for Chelsea really. We already got lucky that he played just 78 minutes for his country in the October break, this fortnight off now gives him another crucial chance to recover. South American qualification is done, so it’s just friendly games the midfielder will miss.

Now, can we find something wrong with Moises Caicedo so we can do the same thing?

In other news…

As well as his presser, Enzo Maresca spoke to the Sky cameras, where he was grinning ear to ear about Malo Gusto “finally” getting his first goal for the club.

Chelsea’s goalscorers Joao Pedro and Malo Gusto spoke to Sky Sports at full time, explaining a little about how they had changed things up to beat Wolves after a frustrating first half ended 0-0.
