Liverpool’s hopes of securing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace ended in extraordinary fashion as the transfer fell through during the final hours of the window. A £35 million agreement had been reached between the clubs, including a 10% sell-on clause, and the England international even completed his medical on Merseyside. Palace had gone as far as preparing a farewell video to mark the departure of their captain before abruptly reversing their decision.
The 24-year-old defender is understood to be deeply frustrated by the situation. Ed Aarons reported: “Told that Marc Guehi is extremely unhappy after being denied a move to Liverpool at the last minute yesterday and feels he behaved correctly by continuing to play before Crystal Palace pulled the plug on a £35m deal. Understand that Guehi is planning to release a statement soon.”
Guehi had been keen on the opportunity to work under Arne Slot, who guided Liverpool to the Premier League title in his debut campaign. The Reds viewed him as a vital addition to strengthen their defensive depth, particularly with a long season ahead competing on multiple fronts.
Following the breakdown of talks, Liverpool remain with four senior centre-backs: Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and 17-year-old Giovanni Leoni. While Slot is satisfied with his current squad, Liverpool’s recruitment team are expected to re-engage in January when Guehi could be available at a reduced fee. Should a deal not materialise in the winter, the summer window presents a significant opportunity given his contract situation at Selhurst Park.
Crystal Palace now face the challenge of managing the fallout, both internally and publicly. Guehi has been a central figure for the club and his frustration over the collapse may test the relationship between player and management. Palace had initially been open to his departure at the agreed price but their last-minute reversal has cast uncertainty over the defender’s immediate future.
Liverpool, for their part, are not expected to give up easily. The admiration for Guehi remains strong and the coming months will determine whether he finally makes the move to Anfield.
