Brentford Firm on Wissa Amid Newcastle Pursuit

Brentford have made their position crystal clear: Yoane Wissa is not for sale. Following the £71 million departure of Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United, along with the exits of captain Christian Norgaard and head coach Thomas Frank, the West London club are keen to avoid what could become a full-scale dismantling of their squad.

As reported by Sky Sports News’ Lyall Thomas, Newcastle United are pursuing the Congo international, and Wissa himself is believed to be keen on the move. However, Brentford remain adamant that their attacker will not be leaving.

The article states, “The player wants to go but Brentford do not want to sell him after they sold Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United for £71m.” This line sets the tone for what has become a crucial moment in Brentford’s summer strategy.

Valuation Rises After Mbeumo Exit

There’s a broader context to Brentford’s reluctance. Wissa and Mbeumo contributed 39 Premier League goals between them last season, a statistic that underlines just how vital the pair were. While no official price tag has been placed on Wissa, it’s clear that any valuation from January has significantly increased following Mbeumo’s move to Old Trafford.

As per Sky Sports News, “Brentford have not put a price on the Congo international, and any valuation they had for him in January has now increased after Mbeumo’s sale.”

Newcastle have reportedly submitted a £25 million bid, which was rejected. They currently view Wissa as a secondary option to Alexander Isak, especially with RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko also on their radar. It’s worth noting that Isak has informed Newcastle of his desire to explore other opportunities this window.

Replacement Planning Still Ongoing

Brentford’s transfer window has been anything but smooth. The club is yet to replace Mbeumo, despite ongoing interest in Omari Hutchinson at Ipswich Town. Talks broke down last week over the proposed payment structure, but the Bees remain hopeful of reaching a new agreement.

The Sky Sports report outlines Brentford’s caution: “The club are acutely aware of the risk in letting both leave, especially without replacements.” In that regard, holding firm on Wissa isn’t just strategic, it’s essential.

Wissa’s Role Too Important to Risk

With Thomas Frank gone and Keith Andrews taking the helm, Brentford are entering a new era. But one thing remains unchanged: the importance of retaining key performers. Wissa has emerged as one of the most effective attacking threats in the league, and losing him, after already shipping out Mbeumo and Norgaard, could tilt Brentford into crisis.

Newcastle’s approach seems tentative. They don’t want to overpay, and if Isak stays, they may redirect their resources elsewhere. But Brentford’s message to any suitors is unwavering: unless the offer is truly exceptional, Wissa stays.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

From a Brentford supporter’s perspective, this report brings mixed emotions. On one hand, it’s frustrating to see Wissa so openly courted by a club like Newcastle, and even more disheartening that he appears ready to leave. But on the other, it’s reassuring to see the club taking a hard stance after what has already been a turbulent summer.

With Keith Andrews now in charge, fans are desperate for some stability. Losing Mbeumo and Norgaard was tough to take, but understandable. Selling Wissa too, especially with no immediate replacement lined up, would risk dragging the club into a relegation fight before the season even starts.

Wissa’s goals, movement and chemistry with Mbeumo were a huge part of our attacking identity last year. Losing both could take months to rebuild. Even if Newcastle raise their bid, unless it’s in the region of £40 million or more, Brentford have every right to dig their heels in.

Most supporters would agree that the time to sell Wissa has passed. The focus should now shift to strengthening, particularly in wide areas and midfield, rather than cashing in. Hopefully, the club holds firm and backs the new manager with the tools to compete, rather than rebuild from scratch.
