Brentford have pulled back from a move for Lazio winger Matteo Cancellieri after seeing an initial approach rejected, according to The Laziali.

The Bees scouted the 23-year-old in the 1-1 draw with Fiorentina at the Stadio Olimpico, then the 1-0 win at Hellas Verona last weekend.

That scouting was said to have led to a €15 million offer, including bonuses. Lazio turned it down, with the club thought to be holding out for around €18 million.

It was subsequently suggested Brentford have moved on to alternative targets and are unlikely to revive their interest in the Italian. The club’s scouts were said to have flagged elements of his display at the Bentegodi, feeling he was too selfish in the final third.

Officials also reportedly felt their interest was being used to secure improved terms with Lazio.

Cancellieri is under contract until June 2027. He spent the previous two campaigns on loan at Empoli and Parma, then Lazio’s transfer ban last summer gave him a fresh chance and he established himself as a regular starter.

He has three goals in 13 Serie A appearances this season. Despite mixed form, most Lazio supporters believe he should start ahead of Gustav Isaksen, who has struggled for fitness and form since the summer.
