Brighton among majority as Premier League winter spending rises

Premier League clubs spent around £400m in the winter window, yet Brighton were among the majority who kept spending modest. According to TheArgus.co.uk, Albion opened the window by signing Pascal Gross from Dortmund for about £1.3m.

Albion fans may well see Monday's big-money winter signing at the Amex on Sunday. Crystal Palace’s reported £48m capture of striker Jorgen Strand Larsen from Wolves was a rare deadline-day flashpoint, with many clubs opting for earlier business or none at all.

Strand Larsen and Antoine Semenyo, who joined Manchester City from Bournemouth for £62.5m on nine January, helped push spending to one of the highest January totals despite limited late drama. That narrowly exceeded last year's £372m and trailed only 2018's £430m and 2023's record £815m.

City also signed Palace captain Marc Guehi for £20m, making those two clubs the window's biggest spenders. Only four deals topped £30m, completed by Tottenham’s £34.7m move for Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid and Palace’s £35m purchase of Brennan Johnson.

Further arrivals over £20m included Fulham’s former City forward Oscar Bobb, Taty Castellanos and Bournemouth winger Rayan, with West Ham's new striker Pablo reportedly just under that mark.

Aston Villa and Sunderland were the only other clubs to spend even £10m on permanent transfers, while Everton, Leeds and Burnley restricted themselves to loans.

Liverpool gave a £55m kick-start to the summer with a deal for Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet, but they, along with Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle, made no winter additions.
