Brighton and Hove Albion have made it clear they are in no rush to part ways with Brazilian forward Joao Pedro, rejecting offers from both Newcastle United and Chelsea, according to reports. As per Sky Sports, who originally reported the situation, the Seagulls have rebuffed a bid worth up to £50 million from Newcastle, holding firm for a £60 million package.
Chelsea’s interest, as reported by The Sunday Times, has also seen them fall short of Brighton’s valuation. The South Coast club are known for their strong negotiating position and have a track record of securing top fees for their talents. Joao Pedro, who signed from Watford last summer, has swiftly become a prized asset at the Amex.
Brighton’s stance is consistent with their established transfer strategy. The club has earned a reputation for unearthing gems and selling at a premium. Last summer, they extracted over £100 million from Chelsea for Moises Caicedo and sold Alexis Mac Allister to Liverpool. Joao Pedro’s value has similarly appreciated after a productive debut season in the Premier League.

In this context, Brighton’s resistance should come as no surprise. As Sky Sports put it, “talks between Newcastle and Brighton are ongoing”, yet there is little indication that Brighton will budge unless their valuation is met in full. Having only been at the club for a single season, Pedro still has room to grow and add value on and off the pitch for Brighton.
New Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca is clearly looking to reshape his attacking line-up, and Pedro’s versatility and flair would suit his possession-based style. With Christopher Nkunku’s fitness still in question and Nicolas Jackson’s consistency yet to solidify, Pedro presents an attractive option. His ability to play across the frontline would bring fluidity and an added dimension to Chelsea’s attacking play.
However, the refusal to meet Brighton’s demands also signals a more cautious Chelsea in the transfer market compared to recent years. The club appears unwilling to pay over the odds, even for talents with Premier League experience. This could either be a sign of fiscal discipline or risk missing out on players who could prove decisive in a competitive top-four race.
Despite Financial Fair Play pressures, Newcastle remain firmly in the hunt. Eddie Howe is keen to bring in more attacking firepower to support Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson. Joao Pedro, with his Premier League pedigree and international calibre, fits their project well.
But just like Chelsea, Newcastle are finding Brighton a tough nut to crack. Their willingness to negotiate shows interest is serious, but Brighton are not in a position of weakness. The Seagulls know Pedro’s potential and are understandably looking to extract maximum value, especially from domestic rivals.
“Brighton are seeking a £60m package to sanction Joao Pedro’s exit after rebuffing an offer worth up to £50m from Newcastle,” as stated by Sky Sports.
From a Chelsea perspective, this story feels familiar. The club’s interest in Joao Pedro makes a lot of sense. He is young, dynamic, already Premier League-proven and would complement Enzo Maresca’s attacking structure. His technical ability and movement would make him a natural fit in a system that emphasises control and positional play.
However, there’s also a lesson to be learned from the Caicedo saga last summer. Brighton do not waver unless their demands are met, and Chelsea should be prepared for tough talks. The key question is whether Pedro is seen as essential or simply a luxury. If it’s the former, then £60 million may ultimately be justified, especially in today’s inflated market.
Supporters would love to see proactive movement in the transfer window, and Pedro would excite the fanbase. He offers flair, unpredictability and could rotate seamlessly with existing forwards. Under Maresca’s guidance, there is a real chance Pedro could elevate his game further. Missing out on him could feel like a missed opportunity down the line.
In short, if Chelsea are serious, this might be the moment to act decisively.
