One of Liverpool's key stars has set a date for a final decision. Will he stay or will he go?
Ibrahima Konate's contract expires in the summer and as things stand, he's off. Though, Liverpool are working hard to get something signed as they'd hate to lose one of their starting players for nothing.
But that's where it's headed. Liverpool were in this situation last season, of course, as Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold all came to their end of their deals.
The first two would re-sign, but Alexander-Arnold quit for Real Madrid. Now, with Los Blancos interested in Konate, we could see history repeat itself.
And just one year later, too.
AS reports that Konate has a deadline for a decision, though. He wants to sort his future before the World Cup - so we're talking 11th of June at the absolute latest.
That would be 20 days prior to Konate becoming a free agent. Liverpool will hope to have something sorted long before then, admittedly, but it's not exactly looking likely right now.
Performance and Defensive Role
Ibrahima Konaté remains a vital component of the Liverpool defence in late March 2026. Despite a challenging Premier League campaign for the club, the Frenchman has maintained an elite passing completion rate across 29 appearances. His physical presence and recovery speed were recently on display during a dominant 4-0 Champions League victory over Galatasaray, which set up a high-stakes quarter-final clash with Manchester City. While his individual form is strong, the backline has faced significant pressure as Liverpool fights for a top-four finish.
Contract Status and Future
The 26-year-old’s future is currently a major talking point at Anfield. His contract is set to expire in June 2026, and while Liverpool has reportedly offered a lucrative extension, no official agreement has been signed. Real Madrid is closely monitoring the situation, viewing the defender as a high-value free agent target. Despite the noise, Konaté hinted at a stay during the March international break, speaking of his long-term ambitions with the club. Nonetheless, Liverpool is reportedly scouting potential replacements as a contingency plan if negotiations fail.
