Liverpool moved to the top of the Champions League table after beating Real Madrid 2-0 at Anfield on Wednesday night.

Alexis MacAllister and Cody Gakpo scored for the Reds in the second half as Liverpool won five games in a row in Europe under Arne Slot.

There was an opportunity for Madrid to come back into the game when Andy Roberton gave away a penalty in the second half.

Kylian Mbappe stepped up, but Caoimhin Kelleher made a brilliant save. It was a huge moment in the game, and the Republic of Ireland goalkeeper deserves massive praise for keeping yet another clean sheet.

In the absence of Alisson, the 26-year-old has been superb for the club, and Chris Sutton has hailed him as “outstanding”.

The popular pundit feels that Liverpool have a strong squad depth compared to Manchester City and Arsenal, and that could make a big difference.

He said, as quoted by BBC Sport: “What Liverpool have that Man City and Arsenal don’t is a greater strength in depth in their squad.

“You look at the goalkeeping position, Caoimhin Kelleher has always been outstanding, he’s got a brilliant temperament. In many respects it was not a great surprise to see him save a penalty.”

What does the future hold for the Liverpool goalkeeper?

Kelleher now made his third penalty save in two weeks, but he will soon go back to the bench as Alisson is nearing full fitness.

He is probably the best second-choice goalkeeper in the Premier League, and the best compliment one can give is that with him in the side, no one felt the absence of Alisson.

He has not conceded a goal in the Champions League, saving all 13 shots on target he has faced.

Alisson, who is widely viewed as the world’s best goalkeeper, is probably a week away from returning to first-team action, which means Kelleher is likely to play against Manchester City on Sunday.

Kelleher has kept five clean sheets in 10 games for the Reds, but his future at the club remains uncertain.
