Bristol City 0-1 West Brom: Baggies survival hopes increase | OneFootball

West Brom picked up a crucial 1-0 win at Ashton Gate this afternoon, thanks to an early goal from George Campbell.

Campbell headed home after 26 minutes to give The Baggies a crucial lead, which they did well to hold on to for the remainder of the match.

Bristol City pushed for an equaliser, but came up short in the final third, only managing four shots in the entire match.

As It Happened

Gerhard Struber made just one change to his Bristol City side ahead of this one, with Sinclair Armstrong dropping to the bench and January signing Tomi Horvat taking his place. West Brom also made just one change with former Bristol City goalkeeper Max O’Leary being replaced by Joshua Griffiths due to injury.

It was the visitors who reigstered the first shot of the game, when Josh Maja’s left footed effort fired wide from inside the Bristol City penalty area. However, travelling fans didn’t have to wait too long to see their side find the net, as Campbell rose highest in the 26th minute to head home a Callum Styles corner, sending the away end into raptures.

The Baggies nearly doubled their lead just six minutes later, when Aune Heggebø saw his shot well saved by Radek Vitek. Horvat picked up the first booking of the day sfor a foul on Isaac Price, bringing the first-half to a close.

The Robins made a triple change at half-time, which saw Mark Sykes, Scott Twine and Horvat withdrawn for Cameron Pring, Max Bird and Armstrong. James Morrison’s side continued to pile on the pressure however, with a string of chances early in the second-half, hoever they just couldn’t quite find the finishing touch required.

Bristol City’s first shot on target of the day came shortly before the hour mark, courtesy of Ross McCrorie, when the Scotsman’s strike was smartly saved by Griffiths who reacted quickly to the danger. Vitek was yet again called into action shortly after at the other end of the pitch, to deny Styles’ long range strike.

James Morrison turned to the Albion bench for the first time in the 69th minute, as Daryl Dike replaced Maja, whilst George Earthy replace Sam Morsy for The Robins. Dike was straight into the action, as the American forward saw his shot blocked inside the area.

Vitek was forced into two more saves moments later, this time preventing Price and Jayson Molumby from doubling West Brom’s lead. Bristol City’s final change saw Middlesbrough loanee Delano Burgzorg replace Emil Riis for the final ten minutes. The Baggies also introduced Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba in favour of Jed Wallace at the same time.

Styles was the second name into Thomas Kirk’s book in the 83rd minute following a bad foul. Heggebø was withdrawn shortly after, with 32-year-old Charlie Taylor entering the fray. Price fired wide from inside the area in gthe 90th minute, bringing the game to an end and confirming a vital three points for West Brom.
