Bruno Fernandes had an eventful night at St James’ Park, as Newcastle United ended Manchester United’s unbeaten run.
Newcastle were on top of United from the off. In desperation to push his side higher up the field, Fernandes ended up giving away a penalty.
However, the Portuguese maestro quickly redeemed himself by assisting Casemiro. He also put several teasing balls into the box, but his teammates failed to make the most of them.
In December of last year, Bruno Fernandes made a stunning revelation that the Manchester United hierarchy wanted him to leave last summer. However, he stayed after speaking with Ruben Amorim.
Ahead of the summer, the Portugal international’s future remains uncertain, and who United appoint as their next permanent manager could influence Fernandes’ decision-making amid interest from Saudi Arabia.
However, it is imperative that the Red Devils keep hold of their captain, who remains their best player. The 31-year-old is also one of the best midfielders in Europe, at least according to his national teammate.
In a recent interview, Paris Saint-Germain and Portugal midfielder Vitinha expressed his delight at being among the “elite” of the position.
Having led PSG to their first Champions League trophy, Vitinha has seen his reputation grow tremendously over the last 18 months.
However, the 26-year-old insisted he does not consider himself “the best” in Europe before lauding three of his counterparts, including Fernandes.
“I don’t feel comfortable saying I’m the best, but I know I’m in that group,” Vitinha told Canal 11 (via One Football). “In a top three, I would put Pedri, because he really is magical. It’s spectacular to watch him play, and when I played against him, I was able to see that up close.”
He added: “Then, I’d include João Neves and Bruno Fernandes along with me and Pedri. I’ll make it a top four. And we can play with four, we can play in a diamond. It’s not a bad midfield.”
Three of those four midfielders are going to feature for Portugal in the World Cup next summer, making them one of the favourites.
United need to add a similar level of technical and athletic players to their midfield ahead of next season to show Fernandes that they mean business.
