In recent seasons, life at Borussia Dortmund can only be described as an emotional rollercoaster. Fans of the Schwarz und Gelb experienced some of the lowest lows under inexperienced and luckless head coach Nuri Sahin, before Niko Kovac galvanised the side and dragged the Ruhrpott giants from 11th-place to a 4th-place Champions League spot on the final matchday. Nobody quite does drama like the BVB it seems!
Signings have been it and miss for Dortmund over the last few years, but they hit the jackpot with the €18million purchase of Serhou Guirassy this time around. Coming off a fantastic season with Stuttgart, expectations were high. Injuries curtailed his start to the season, but the Guinean fit like a glove on his return to fitness. From his ability to peel off defenders and bring others into play, to strong pressing and work rate – the 29-year-old has it all.
It naturally has to be mentioned that Guirassy’s clinical finishing is easily his most admirable skill. A debut season is always tricky, but the BVB marksman demonstrated his ability with 21 goals and 2 assists in 30 matches to finish the campaign as the Bundesliga’s joint-second highest scorer. I don’t think any fan of the German domestic game would be shocked if he improves on that tally in 2025-26.
A performance that will live long in BVB hearts – Serhou Guirassy’s four-goal haul in Dormtund’s 6-0 triumph over Union Berlin. At an atmospheric Westfalenstadion, a fortunate Diogo Leite own-goal opened the floodgates for the hosts. But the Guinean gave a masterclass in finishing as he flicked Pascal Gross’ 40th-minute cross past Ronnow with a cushioned header from close range.
With 15 minutes remaining, Gross slipped Guirassy in on the angle to squeeze the ball to the roof of the net from an insanely acute angle. The hattrick would arrive shortly afterwards as Maxi Beier unselfishly set up the 29-year-old for a 3-yard tap-in. Before the evening was out, the Gross-Guirassy connection collaborated once more as the German lifted the ball into the box for the marksman to hold off Leite and nod home his fourth.
A nasty meniscus injury sustained in early April ended Nico Schlotterbeck’s season abruptly, but he performed incredibly well across the 23 games he did participate in. The 25-year-old centre-half deservedly picked up a vote from our writing team as he dominated duels, provided 4 assists and led the troops like a lion. There’s no denying he will make a fine captain one day.
