VfL Wolfsburg were riding high for the bulk of the 2024-25 season and looked like a surprise candidate for the Bundesliga’s European places. It appeared destined to be one of the shocks of the campaign but the wheels, no pun intended, rapidly fell off the Autostadt club inside the final 10 matchdays. The dismissal of Ralph Hassenhüttl confirmed that after a hefty defeat to Dortmund nailed the coffin shut.

While a couple of players enjoyed consistent spells over the campaign, nobody shone quite as bright as Mohamed Amoura. The 25-year-old arrived on loan from Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise and appeared to slot into the setup in Lower Saxony with little fuss. Credit has to be given for laying claim to a first-team place despite ample competition for spots.

With his low centre of gravity, lightning speed and eye for goal, the Algerian forward bagged 10 goals over 31 games. However, Amoura is far from a one-trick pony as he clearly has an eye for a pass with 9 assists across the campaign. With Die Wölfe expected to acquire his talent permanently, don’t be surprised if he retains this award next season either!

STANDOUT PERFORMANCE:

Mohamed Amoura’s most memorable performance of the season came as part of Wolfsburg’s 5-1 throttling of RB Leipzig back on Matchday 12. A delightful Patrick Wimmer pass slipped Ridle Baku in behind for Amoura to open the scoring from a tight angle inside 4 minutes.

Thiago Tomas’ strike extended the visitors lead before Amoura pounced again. Bence Dardai clipped a ball into the Algerian who’s slight of foot left Haidara for dead before threading it through Gulacsi’s legs. Joakhim Mæhle and Kevin Behrens added gloss to the scoreboard either side of a Willi Orban consolation as Die Wolfe feasted at the Leipzig Arena with Amoura to the fore.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS:

With Amoura picking up 8 of a possible 9 votes from our team, the only other member of the Wolfsburg squad to the remainder was Jonas Wind. It was a quieter season by the Dane’s standards, but the 26-year-old managed to tog out for Wolfsburg on 31 occasions and plunged in 9 goals and 3 assists in the process.
