Bayern Munich were looking to get back on track in the Bundesliga after losing their first game of the season last weekend against Augsburg. While Hamburg were hoping to show an improved attacking performance compared to last weekend’s dire 0-0 draw with city rivals St.Pauli.
Considering the first meeting between these two sides ended 5-0 to Bayern, Merlin Polzin’s side took the game to the visitors and had the first good chance of the game following a Luka Vuskovic header. Bayern then managed to gain more of a hold of the game and did threaten HSV’s defence. Nicolas Capaldo forced a good save from Manuel Neuer, then a Joshua Kimmich effort rattled the crossbar.
Hamburg’s pressure was then rewarded when a Kimmich follow-up on Nicolai Remberg resulted in a penalty, which Fabio Vieria converted to make 1-0. However, just before half-time, Harry Kane would equalise for Bayern with a swivelling shot.
Just after half-time, substitute Luis Diaz scored to make it 2-1, but the game would continue to follow a similar pattern to the first half, and instead of accepting their fate, HSV came back and made it 2-2 through a Luka Vuskovic header.
At times in the second half, it looked as if Hamburg were the team more likely to win this game, as they had the better chances. The best example of this was when HSV countered, and a Philippe shot was cleared off the line by Alphonso Davies.
Bayern continued to increase the pressure on Hamburg as the game approached full time, there would be a late penalty claim for handball.
Daniel Heuer Fernandes (6), Nicolas Capaldo (7), Luka Vuskovic (7), Daniel Elfadli (5), William Mikelbrencis (6), Albert Sambi Lokonga (6), Nicolai Remberg (7), Miro Muheim (6), Bakary Jatta (5), Fabio Vieira (6), Ransford Königsdörffer (5)
Others: Giorgi Gocholeishvili (5), Rayan Philippe (5), Warmed Omari (5)
Manuel Neuer (6), Josip Stanisic (6), Min-Jae Kim (5), Dayot Upamecano (6), Alphonso Davies (5), Joshua Kimmich (6), Aleksandar Pavlovic (6), Michael Olise (6), Serge Gnabry (6), Lennart Karl (5), Harry Kane (6)
Others: Luis Diaz (6), Jamal Musiala (5), Jonathan Tah (5)
Vuskovic continues to show how great he is. Against one of the best teams in Europe, where Hamburg’s backs were up against the wall for most of the game, the 18-year-old put in a strong defensive display with nine defensive contributions (via FotMob), considering he was up against not only one of the best strikers in the world in Harry Kane, but also one of the best teams overall in Bayern, it is incredible to see he is still only 18.
Whilst on the attacking front, Vuskovic used his immense aerial ability once again to bring Hamburg back into the game.
