Manchester United shared the spoils with Burnley as their match ended in 2-2 draw after failing to capitalise on Chelsea dropping points.

Ayden Heaven inadvertently deflected the ball into his own goal to give Burnley a surprise early lead, but a brace from Benjamin Šeško had turned the tie around by the hour mark.

Alas, Jaidon Anthony struck not long after to claim a thoroughly important point for the Clarets, while United’s first game in the post-Ruben Amorim era continued the theme of dropped points.

As it happened

Manchester United dominated possession in the opening stages, controlling the ball for much of the first eight minutes.

Casemiro registered the game’s first attempt, though his effort failed to trouble the Martin Dúbravka.

Burnley took the lead against the run of play when a low cross from Bashir Humphreys deflected off Heaven and looped into the top corner, leaving Senne Lammens wrong-footed.

Šeško threatened an equalizer with a firm header, only for Dúbravka to produce a sharp save.

Bruno Fernandes’ free kick was headed across goal to Matheus Cunha, who headed it past Dúbravka, only for Humphreys to clear the ball over the crossbar.

Moments later, Lisandro Martínez blocked Kyle Walker, who went to ground, but the referee initially allowed play to continue. The ball then fell to Martínez, who fired home, but the whistle blew and the goal was ruled out for the foul on Walker.

Burnley had the chance to double their lead through Lucas Pires, but his effort flew well wide of the target.

Manchester United threatened through Šeško, who raced down the left past Josh Laurent before firing a shot straight at Dúbravka.

Šeško went close again as Dúbravka reacted sharply to tip his header over the crossbar, while Manuel Ugarte’s follow-up volley flew narrowly past the far post.

Just before half-time, United came agonizingly close to an equalizer when Patrick Dorgu beat Dúbravka, only for Maxime Estève to hook the ball off the line.

Burnley went into the break without registering a single shot on target, in contrast to Manchester United’s one.

Manchester United equalized early in the second half when Fernandes threaded a pass through to Šeško, who calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net.

Fletcher’s side had chances to move 3–1 ahead as both Cunha and Martínez went close, before Fernandes struck the right-hand post.

Šeško doubled United’s lead, calmly slotting a right-footed finish from the centre of the box past Dúbravka.

Six minutes after Šeško gave United the lead, Burnley equalized for a second time as Anthony curled the ball into the back of the net.

Šeško nearly made it aa hat-trick for himself, but Dúbravka was equal to his shot, keeping the ball out with a solid save.

Just a minute after replacing Ugarte, Shea Lacey nearly put United ahead with a brilliant strike that rattled the crossbar.

Manchester United had the chance to take advantage of Chelsea dropping points and move into fourth, but they were unable to do so.

Up next for Manchester United is FA Cup action against Brighton at Old Trafford, while Burnley face a visit from Millwall.
