The precedent set by Burnley could come back to bite Leicester City
Leicester City are preparing for the new League One season after suffering relegation from the second tier.
The Foxes finished inside the bottom three for a second consecutive campaign, having been relegated from the Premier League in 2025.
Russell Martin has been appointed as the new head coach, and he will be aiming to guide the club to promotion at the first attempt.
The 40-year-old previously enjoyed promotion success in the Championship with Southampton, leading the Saints to a play-off triumph in 2024 against Leeds United.
Financial issues have hampered Leicester in recent seasons, but the club will still be optimistic about pushing for a top two finish in the coming year.
The Leicestershire outfit were handed a six-point deduction in 2025/26 for breaching the profit and sustainability rules (PSR), which played a direct role in their relegation as they finished five points from safety.

It has been reported by The Athletic that Leeds have opened legal proceedings against Leicester as a consequence of missing out on automatic promotion in 2024.
Burnley won a legal battle against Everton earlier this year in which they were awarded £35 million due to the Toffees’ breach of PSR during the campaign in which the Championship side suffered relegation from the Premier League (2021/22).
And it’s been claimed that the Whites have gained the confidence to pursue this legal case as a result of the Clarets’ major financial victory.
Leicester gained promotion with a first place finish in the second division in 2024, with Leeds coming third in the table.
But the Foxes have been found guilty of breaching PSR for this period, meaning the Yorkshire outfit are seeking compensation for the loss of revenue that comes with missing out on promotion.
The Clarets successfully argued that Everton’s PSR breach, which saw them deducted six points in 2023/24, played a significant role in Burnley’s relegation as they finished four points from safety.
Meanwhile, Leicester were docked six points, and they finished seven points clear of Leeds to gain automatic promotion under Enzo Maresca.
If Leeds win in their legal case, then it could prove quite costly for the Foxes, who will be fearing that a punishment similar to the £35 million payment could be heading their way.
However, it remains to be seen whether the Whites will be successful in their dispute with the League One side, with the hearing not set to take place until next summer.

Leicester has endured a difficult two years since gaining promotion in 2024, and they certainly wouldn’t have expected to be in League One by now when they won that Championship title.
And now more legal issues could prove a major distraction for the club, and could be quite expensive even if they manage to successfully defend themselves.
If Leicester are punished in a similar fashion to Everton, then that would be a real disaster for their financial position, which is still in recovery mode.
While an outcome from this case isn’t likely for some time, it will serve as a cloud hanging over the club, which will not please fans or the coaching staff and the squad.
