A cross-border revival for a defender seeking a fresh start
Jérôme Onguéné / FC Petrolul Ploiești
Jérôme Onguéné has signed with FC Petrolul Ploiești for the ongoing 2025-2026 season, with an option to extend his stay in Romania. Released from his contract with Frankfurt in January, the defender is aiming to reignite his career in a new league, with the possibility of a contract extension.
Jérôme Onguéné joined the Romanian championship on September 9, 2025, after spending several months without a club. FC Petrolul Ploiești, currently sitting twelfth in Liga I, officially announced his arrival to bolster a struggling backline. The club has conceded nine goals in eight rounds and is targeting a top-six finish to secure a spot in the championship's upper phase.
A product of the Sochaux academy, Onguéné has played in several European leagues. His career has taken him to Germany (Stuttgart, Frankfurt), Italy (Genoa), Switzerland (Servette), and most notably Austria with Red Bull Salzburg. With the Austrian club, he made thirteen appearances in the Champions League and eight in the Europa League, where he scored once. His trophy cabinet includes five Austrian league titles, four domestic cups, and a Swiss Cup won with Servette.
