Can Inzaghi’s Inter finally claim a major double?

In the past few years, there have been few Italian teams that have even come close to the level of Inter, and that is largely thanks to Simone Inzaghi. While the Nerazzurri have claimed everything Italy has to offer, there is one prize that they are looking for, residing outside of the Peninsula.
There are genuine debates about this Inter team and how far they can actually go. In recent memory, few teams have gotten anywhere close to the level of Inzaghi’s side, and there are numerous reasons for this, though there is one man who should be credited with the success above all.
That is Inzaghi himself. The Italian is one of the best coaches in world football and in truth, he has been for a few years now. He and his side may not have claimed the accolades for this to be cemented, but Inter’s dominance is largely down to him.
There are few better squad coaches (those who can acutely manage an entire roster through an entire season, as well as manage their individual needs) than the former Lazio man, and this is all while the Nerazzurri have been surrounded by issues off the field.
We only have to go back to May 2024, when the club was taken over by Oaktree due to the previous owner’s debt – which stood at almost €900 million. Now, the side could potentially recreate the double that they won 15 years ago – treble even if we include the Coppa Italia.
At present, Inzaghi’s team are probably the safest bet to win the Scudetto, though it will be no easy feat. Napoli are the biggest threat, but issues with Antonio Conte and his squad are growing, which surely sends some confidence to Milano, and Atalanta have failed to really grasp things since the Supercoppa Italiana.
It is the Champions League where the big question marks are placed, and can you blame people? Despite having the best defensive record in the competition, conceding just once in eight games, and finishing fourth in the league ranking, they are priced as the 7th favourites to win the competition by bookmakers – currently sitting at 14/1.
We start domestically, where Inzaghi is looking to win his third Serie A title and second as a coach, coincidentally going back-to-back for the first time in his career. A feat which has not been completed in Italy since Juventus’ dominating spell of nine in a row.
It almost feels weird saying this, but the Nerazzurri have somewhat gone under the radar this season, with others focusing on the stories of other clubs in more depth. For example, the beauty of Atalanta winning a Scudetto under Gian Piero Gasperini or even Conte’s return to management bringing a Scudetto back to Naples.

At the start of the campaign, Inter lagged a little before doing what they always do and finding a groove that has seen them almost unstoppable for a while now. For others, the lag has started now, and Inzaghi is looking to capitalise heavily. So far, he is.
As things stand, there are only three points separating his side and La Dea, whilst the Partenopei are just a point behind.
Here is where we get to the interesting part of this story – the Champions League.
Had it not been for a poor display from Romelu Lukaku in Istanbul, perhaps we would already have the ability to speak of an Italian Champions League winner since 2010. However, we can’t so let’s not dwell on the past.
Inter romped through their league phase game, conceding just once, losing once, drawing once. Six wins from eight is a marvellous achievement, which only five teams managed, which is a testament to Inzaghi and his squad once again (and Atletico Madrid here as well, but they are not the focus).
There is a chance that the side could be dealt a deathly hand, and their path to a final could include Bayern Munich and Barcelona in the next two rounds, which is a terrifying idea. However, it could also consist of games against Bayer Leverkusen and then Borussia Dortmund, Lille, or Benfica, as reported earlier this week.
Currently, the odds on display from the bookmakers seem to be a little off, with Opta (via TNT Sports) suggesting that there is a 14.9% chance of them lifting the trophy this season – though information was reported before the conclusion of the League Phase, so it is likely to have changed a little now.
The bookmakers, on the other hand, suggest that the Italian outfit have a 6.7% chance of winning the competition, which Inzaghi will surely hope he can increase as time goes on, and time has shown he normally does.
Whether the dream will happen this season remains to be seen, but for Inter, they can start dreaming, if they have not already.
