Crystal Palace will believe they can be the side to finally halt Liverpool’s winning start to the Premier League season.
Oliver Glasner’s men have already defeated the champions this year, beating them on penalties in the Community Shield with a performance built on organisation and discipline.
That afternoon at Wembley Stadium offered a clear blueprint for how Palace might once again frustrate Arne Slot’s side.
Liverpool visit Selhurst Park with five league wins from five and a sense of momentum that comes with defending a title.
Slot has acknowledged that many of the victories have been close affairs, and his honesty reflects a side that has had to grind through tight contests rather than dominate.
That could encourage Palace, who are unbeaten in the league and have been one of the most difficult teams to break down this season.
They boast the joint-best defensive record in the division alongside Arsenal. Glasner has instilled a level of discipline across the pitch that makes Palace difficult to dislodge.
Slot admitted as much in his press conference, describing Palace’s defensive organisation as their greatest threat and recalling how they stayed calm in low-block situations during the Community Shield.
Palace have not been prolific in attack, but they have had different sources of goals, as evidenced by Tyrick Mitchell scoring in the recent victory over West Ham United.
Their issue has been turning draws into wins, yet their unbeaten sequence has now stretched to 11 Premier League matches, underlining a growing resilience.
History favours Liverpool, who have won nine of their last 10 league visits to Selhurst Park. However, Palace’s belief will come from their recent Wembley success and their own defensive strength.
If Glasner’s team can repeat that level of discipline and sharpen their edge in attack, they may blow a hole in Liverpool’s perfect league record.
