Canada head coach Jesse Marsch believes Tajon Buchanan would’ve succeeded at Inter Milan had he not joined Villarreal in the summer.
Speaking to Tuttosport via FCInterNews, Marsch discussed the wingback’s unfortunate stint at San Siro.
Tajon Buchanan joined Inter from Club Brugge in January 2024 for a reported fee of €7 million.
However, after making only 17 appearances for the club over the next 12 months, he switched to Villarreal on loan.
Despite failing to turn his move permanent at the end of last season, the Spaniard ended up signing the 26-year-old.
Indeed, El Submarino Amarillo paid the Nerazzurri around €9 million to capture the Canadian wingback’s services in August.
It’s been an impressive start to the season for the versatile forward.
For context, Buchanan scored a hat-trick in a 5-0 thrashing of Girona, cementing his place in the starting line-up.
Meanwhile, he remains a vital part of Canada’s national team.

Marsch believes that Buchanan struggled to adapt to Inter’s style of play.
“Let’s say Inter plays in a different way compared to our team,” he stated.
“The Nerazzurri need more of a wide midfielder, a fifth, while Tajon is more of a pure winger.
“I still believe that Buchanan, who has now started really well at Villarreal, could have made an impact even in Milan.
“However,Denzel Dumfries is definitely an excellent player as well.”
Then, Marsch talked about the upcoming Derby d’Italia.
Indeed, Inter Milan will take fierce rivals Juventus in one of the most iconic Serie A fixtures on Saturday.
“It will certainly be an interesting match,” Marsch claimed. “I’m now even a Juventus fan, since the Bianconeri signed David and Inter sold Tajon Buchanan.
“So, I’ll be cheering for my player.”
Jonathan David, formerly linked with Inter, will face the Nerazzurri this weekend.
