Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, 40, who broke out at this summer’s World Cup, is set to join Colo Colo from GD Chaves in Portugal’s second tier, the Chilean club’s president said on Friday. According to L'Équipe, Anibal Mosa said he will become a Colo Colo player.
Vozinha was among the tournament’s standout figures, producing a 0-0 shutout against Spain in the group stage, the eventual world champions. He then led Cape Verde into the round of 32, where the Blue Sharks took finalists Argentina to extra time before losing 2-3.
Mosa said the keeper will arrive in Chile in the coming days, undergo routine medical tests, then be presented at the club’s Monumental Stadium. He was speaking before a national league match.
A late bloomer, he had stints in Cyprus, Slovakia, Moldova and Angola, and did not sign his first professional contract until he was 26. Mosa added that he is in very good shape, which is why the club are recruiting him.
His popularity has soared on and off the pitch, thanks to eye-catching saves and the story of his mother, who was eventually allowed into the United States after initially being barred. Boosted by his World Cup displays and a spotlight from Brazilian influencer Casimiro, his Instagram following has rocketed from 50,000 to nearly 30 million.
