Carlos Soler has pushed back into Spain contention, making Luis de la Fuente’s provisional list after an impressive spell with Real Sociedad. According to AS, the former PSG midfielder has four goals and two assists across 29 league and cup games this season.
He was influential in qualifying for Qatar 2022 with important goals that cemented his call-up. At the finals he scored against Costa Rica.
He was then one of the players to miss in the penalty shootout that sent Luis Enrique’s Spain out to Morocco in the last 16 on six December 2022, his last game for La Roja. His record stands at 14 senior appearances and four goals.
A final cut still lies ahead before the definitive squad is named. Competition in Spain’s midfield is fierce, with pivots Zubimendi and Rodri, and mobile options Pedri, Fermín, Baena and Dani Olmo. There are doubts around Gavi after his recent return to fitness, and injuries to Merino, Barrios and Fabián.
Soler was capped at under-19 and under-21 level, winning the 2019 Euros, and took Olympic silver at Tokyo 2020. He debuted for the senior side in 2021. Also included are Remiro, Sergio Gómez, Barrenetxea and Oyarzabal.
Real Sociedad’s run to the Copa final and the level shown under Matarazzo have not gone unnoticed by De la Fuente. Spain had been set to play Argentina in the Finalissima during the impending international break, but that fixture was suspended. A friendly with Serbia is pencilled in for the 27th.
