Carlton Palmer reveals all on whether he expects Djeidi Gassama to attract interest in the summer.
Carlton Palmer has urged Sheffield Wednesday to sort out Djeidi Gassama's contract as soon as possible, following a season of impressive performances from the 21-year-old.
Signed from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2023, the young star showed flashes of potential last season. However, this year, he has consistently emerged as a genuine threat going forward for Wednesday.
Slotting in alongside the experienced heads of Michael Smith, Josh Windass and Barry Bannan, he hasn't looked out of place and is a pivotal reason as to why the Owls are chasing a play-off spot heading into the final third of the season.
Football League World's Sheffield Wednesday pundit has suggested the club should demand at least £10 million for him, but with his contract expiring in just under 18 months, achieving this figure may prove challenging.
Nonetheless, Wednesdayites should continue to enjoy watching him, and it would come as no surprise if the Frenchman plays a crucial role in helping Rohl's side secure a top-six finish.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Carlton Palmer revealed how impressed he has been by the form of the winger.
"One of the players who has been instrumental in Wednesday's form is Djeidi Gassama. He has been very influential for Sheffield Wednesday, having joined them from Paris Saint-Germain last summer," said the former Wednesday midfielder.
"He had a tough first season at Hillsborough as they battled against relegation, but the 21-year-old still managed to score four goals and provide three assists in 37 appearances.
"This season, he has made significant progress, scoring five goals and registering one assist in 32 appearances, with 23 of them coming from the start.
"He has shown how brilliant he can be at picking up the ball and running."
Speaking about whether his performances are going to attract interest, Palmer added: "Teams are going to be looking at Gassama. That is what you want.
"His decision-making is getting better, his ability to pick a pass has improved and he has the quality to strike from distance. He has age on his side and will only continue to grow, but with his contract expiring in the summer of 2026, I think Sheffield Wednesday need to get him tied down pretty quickly.
"You don't want to be heading into next year with only a year left on his contract. You just don't want to be in that position, especially when he is showing the form that he is in."
Ultimately, the Owls will struggle to match the financial terms of clubs that may be interested in his services, with owner Dejphon Chansiri not particularly eager to offer heavily financed long-term deals currently.
This may force them to consider a move for Gassama in the summer, but ideally, he would stay at Hillsborough, as his contributions are likely to continue growing.
Time will tell whether Chansiri heeds Palmer's advice, but if not, the Owls have a valuable asset in Gassama, who could generate a large profit in the summer.
