Jamie Carragher has laid out what Cole Palmer needs to do in order for him to consider the 22-year-old the best player in the Premier League.

Palmer’s rise to the top of the game has been meteoric following his move from Manchester City last summer and he’s taken the Premier League by storm.

In a short space of time he’s established himself as one of the best players in the Premier League and was named Young Player of the Year last season after scoring 22 goals and providing 11 assists.

The question surrounding Palmer heading into this season was could he get close to or even better his feats of last season, and if his start to the season is anything to go by you wouldn’t bet against him.

The England international has had a superb start to the campaign with six goals and four assists in the first six games after his superb four goal haul against Brighton last Saturday.

Conversation has rightly centred around whether Palmer is now the best player in the league given how he’s performing and Carragher laid out what he needs to do for him to consider that, but admitted last season he probably was the best.

“Last season, I was a little bit reticent to say he was the best player in the Premier League,” he said on Monday Night Football.

“I actually felt he was, but the fact Chelsea hadn’t had such a great season, and I ended up going for Foden, just above him and most people thought the same.

“But inside, I felt like he was the best player in the Premier League. And on the back of last season and this season, if he carries on like this again, through this season. I think he’s the best player in the Premier League, I do.”

Palmer is showing no signs of slowing down and whilst he will have the night off against Gent in the Europa Conference League on Thursday he will be back in action against Nottingham Forest on Sunday as Chelsea look to make it four Premier League wins in a row.
