Wayne Rooney has said Michael Carrick 'has to get the job' at Manchester United following his performances as interim manager.

Carrick led Manchester United to a 3-1 win over Aston Villa on Sunday to cement the club's position in theChampions League places.

Goals from Casemiro, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko secured a statement win, a result that moves the Red Devils six points clear of Chelsea in sixth.

It continues an excellent period for the caretaker coach since taking over from Ruben Amorim. United have won seven of his nine fixtures in charge across all competitions, losing just once. That run has included wins over each of the three other sides in thePremier League's top four.

Former Manchester United captain Rooney, who played alongside Carrick for over a decade, has backed his former teammate for the full-time role.

He questioned why the club would change a winning formula, given the 44-year-old's immediate impact.

"100% he should [get the job]. I have said this. I knew this was going to happen with Michael Carrick," Rooney toldBBC Radio 5 Live.

"I know him very well. I know his character, his personality. It needed a calm head, but someone who knows the place and the players needed some love, and he has given them that.

"We have seen the players play with more quality, more together as a team, and they look like a very strong team. For me, why would you change?

"He has got the best winning percentage of any Manchester United manager after that many games. For me, he has to get the job."
