Carrick two steps closer to Man Utd confirmation as another ‘proven’ duo pull out | OneFootball

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick is increasingly likely to be confirmed in his post for next season, especially with other top candidacies gradually fading.

The 44-year-old was given the interim role in mid-January following the sacking of Ruben Amorim.

The Englishman thus returned to the club for a third spell, having already enjoyed an unforgettable playing stint between 2006 and 2018, as well as spending more than three years as an assistant coach for Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjær between 2018 and 2021.

Since Carrick’s arrival, Man Utd have been enjoying an upturn. In his 10 games in charge, the club won seven, drew two, and lost only once.

The Wallsend native has taken a simple approach, reverting to a more traditional formation (4-2-3-1), while emphasising the importance of the club’s academy. In fact, Carrick hasn’t missed an opportunity to watch United’s youth ranks in action.

Therefore, the consensus around Carrington is that Carrick will be confirmed, unless the management is handed a golden opportunity to sign a ‘world-class’ manager.

But as reported in recent weeks, Carrick’s chances were boosted, with Thomas Tuchel and Carlo Ancelotti ruling themselves out of the race by choosing to prolong their experiences with England and Brazil beyond the World Cup.

And now, the Manchester Evening News journalist Steven Railston reports that Luis Enrique and Julian Nagelsmann will follow suit.

“Carrick has done a wonderful job since his arrival, and he is the frontrunner to land the role on a permanent basis this summer,” he explained.

“United sources have maintained they are undergoing a thorough process to decide who gets the job, but there is no other outstanding, attainable alternative on the managerial market.

“If an elite manager is available, United must make an effort to bring that candidate in. Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique have a proven track record at elite European clubs, and they are admired by United, but Nagelsmann will manage Germany at the World Cup this summer, and Enrique is expected to sign a new deal with Paris Saint-Germain.”

Man Utd prefer to keep Carrick over Glasner & Iraola

While Ancelotti, Tuchel, Enrique, and Nagelsmann are considered unavailable, Man Utd have a better chance at landing Oliver Glasner, who is leaving Crystal Palace at the end of the season, or Andoni Iraola, who has impressed at Bournemouth.

However, Railston believes neither is considered an ‘elite’ profile, so at this point, Man Utd would prefer to stick with Carrick, who hasn’t done anything to harm his chances or raise red flags.

“Oliver Glasner and Andoni Iraola have done well at Crystal Palace and Bournemouth, respectively, but managing United is another level.

“Carrick is already in the building and he is proving he can cut it. The players have backed him for the job, and he should get it if he secures Champions League football, provided Nagelsmann and Enrique are unavailable.”

This is certainly a sensible approach on INEOS’ part, as there is no reason to halt the momentum built by Carrick to hand the reins to Glasner, who shares Amorim’s passion for the three-man backline (perhaps less stubbornly), or an even younger tactician in Iraola.
