Manchester United duo Casemiro and Matheus Cunha have been handed a major boost in the Brazil national team ahead of this summer’s World Cup.
Casemiro and Cunha are each in a rich vein of form, with United flying since the appointment of Michael Carrick as Ruben Amorim’s temporary replacement.
Casemiro has started all three games Carrick has taken charge of, playing a key role in victories over Manchester City, Arsenal and more recently, Fulham.
Against Fulham in particular, Casemiro delivered a masterclass, breaking the deadlock before then assisting Cunha for United’s second of the game. For his efforts, the midfielder won the Premier League’s Player of the Matchweek award while also being named in Alan Shearer’s Premier League Team of the Week.
Like Casemiro, Cunha has also been superb under Carrick. He didn’t start in the first two games but was decisive in both. Cunha assisted Patrick Dorgu to make it 2-0 vs. City, before following that up by bagging the winner against Arsenal.
With Dorgu injured, Cunha was named in the starting XI in the meeting with Fulham and he didn’t disappoint, smashing home from a tight angle to double United’s lead.
While successful under Amorim, the pair have elevated their game to another level with Carrick.
Casemiro and Cunha are expected to be key for Brazil at the upcoming World Cup, and they have just received positive news on that front.
According to ESPN, Casemiro and Cunha are two of eleven players who are guaranteed spots in the national team for the tournament.
As manager Carlo Ancelotti and his coaching staff evaluate options for Brazil’s squad, 11 players have already cemented their places regardless of future decisions.
“ESPN has learned that, of the 26 players whose names will be announced by Ancelotti in May, 11 have guaranteed spots unless something unexpected happens, such as an injury.”
“These are: goalkeeper Alisson , defenders Marquinhos and Gabriel Magalhães , midfielders Casemiro and Bruno Guimarães , and forwards Vinicius Jr. , Estêvão , Raphinha , Rodrygo , Matheus Cunha , and Gabriel Martinelli.”
Having captained Brazil last year, Casemiro is likely to retain the armband given his vast experience. However, he will not be United player by then since he announced he will part ways with the club at the end of the season.
