Manchester United midfielder Casemiro could extend his time at the club thanks to a condition laid out in his contract that would allow him to trigger an extension.

Currently, Man United are faced with a severe shortage of midfield options.

While the Brazilian is, of course, at their disposal, his performances have become erratic, while his age dictates that he could move on in the not-too-distant future.

Still, even as transfer rumours surrounding the 33 year old continue to swirl, he could succeed in securing another season at Old Trafford thanks to a special condition laid out in his contract.

Transfer links

While the Brazilian has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia in the past, he seems to be heavily linked with a move to the United States, with MLS clubs such as LA Galaxy expressing their interest in the midfielder.

His home country of Brazil has most recently been revealed as a potential destination, with Palmeiras reportedly making contact with the player’s representatives to inquire as to his professional future.

Still, the Brazilian could find a way to remain at United past the upcoming summer.

Casemiro’s lifeline

“Casemiro can trigger his extra year at Manchester United by starting a certain number of games this season,” Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic reported today.

“The 33-year-old would automatically see his contract extended to 2027, at his current salary, were he to hit the target, believed to be 35 starts in all competitions.”

Still, the report acknowledged that this target is very unlikely to be met by the veteran midfielder.

Given United’s early exits from the FA Cup and League Cup, the team has just 40 matches to play this season.

Having started in 18 matches so far, he would need to start every one of United’s remaining 17 games until the end of the season.

While possible, this is unlikely, which may come as a relief to fans who want the team to offload the player, given his bumper wage package and turbulent performances on the pitch.
