“If you know the history” is a line from The Celtic Song we all love to chant as the team runs out of the tunnel, and onto the park. We Celtic fans are proud of our history and heritage, and the sense of unity it brings in light of bitter opposition. Today, we are in the throes of civil war, and the club is anything but united.

The recent shambolic coming together between fans and board members has not had the desired effect. In fact, it has driven a bigger wedge into the chasm which doesn’t look like healing any time soon.

We wanted answers; we were snubbed. We asked for parity; we were ‘put in our place’. We demanded explanations; we were sneered at.

This is the state of play in modern football. There will be no Fergus McCanns to stand in our corner, because, unlike 1994, this board holds all the aces and wields all the power.

This is not good news for a support which pays its dues, buys the tickets, sports the expensive merch, and forks out unfathomable sums of money to travel Scotland, Europe and Asia in the hope of cheering a team worthy of them.

A cursory glance at our fan pages, blogs, and social media commentaries, reveals dashed hopes, and angry voices. The problem is this; the voices are not united. You are either a malcontent, or a bed-wetter. Name calling is king.

Some blast the board for their incompetence, and spendthrift attitude towards the faithful.

Others blast the fans who blast the board, the manager, or anyone who disturbs their peace. That’s their choice, and they are entitled to their views like anyone else – without being abused!

The club has more money at our disposal than any other time in our history. The funds are being misspent or not spent at all, and the majority are calling out the men who hold the purse strings, and hold back vital transfers – rightly so!

It doesn’t matter that the new Ibrox entity have sunk themselves, leaving Celtic the ‘show-jumpers’ of Scottish football. It only matters that we are fit for European and domestic purpose, and, in 2025, this is not the case.

Europe is a shambles, and we are domestically insipid, even trailing Hearts in the league.

We need to protest, and we need to challenge those who fail (for whatever reason), the paying customer. When they snigger into their phones, roll their eyes, shrug their shoulders and dismiss us with smart-ass throwaway lines, we must respond.

But, we must respond as a united group, not fractured bodies. Boycott the games? Don’t buy the merch? That’s a matter of conscience, but, everyone must stand behind the men behind the banners!

Fighting among ourselves only provides succour for the men behind the phones. Don’t give them the satisfaction. If 60,000 turn up, give them heaps! Fly the malcontent banners and sing the malcontent songs, but, support the team.

United, we are a powerful force. Fractured, we will capitulate, and, given that it’s OUR club, that is unforgivable.

Luke 11:17

“But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth.”

Hail Hail!
