Danny Rohl’s side fought back in the second half, with Youssef Chermiti and Nico Raskin both on target to level the game.

However, Longelo’s late strike snatched all three points for Motherwell. Jens Berthel Askou’s men has been viewed as the potential kingmakers of the title race, and there is no doubt they will have more of a say in the coming weeks ahead.

Jens Berthel Askou’s side brought an end to a five-match run without victory in Glasgow, strengthening their push for a Europa Conference League qualifying place while simultaneously denting the Ibrox club’s title ambitions.

Welsh’s parent club had already done their part on Saturday with a 3-1 win over Falkirk, a result that lifted the Hoops level at the top of the Premiership standings alongside Hearts. At the same time, Hearts were behind to Hibernian at Easter Road when the final whistle went at Ibrox.

The Ibrox club remain third in the table, sitting four points off the top of the table with four games still to play.

A defeat at Tynecastle a week today will spell the end for the Rangers’ title hopes and they will then head to Celtic Park a week later perhaps hoping to win the Jambos the title.

Meanwhile, Welsh was seen roaring in celebration in the tunnel at full-time, screaming “YASSSSSSSSSSSSS,” like many of the Celtic supporters who were sent the score updates on their phones.

While the 26-year-old may not qualify for a Scottish Premiership medal due to limited appearances, his reaction endeared him to the Celtic support on social media.

Motherwell later shared footage of his celebration on X, where it quickly attracted strong engagement from both their own supporters and Celtic fans.
