It’s been a night to forget for Celtic in the Como Cup. Football on the lake took place in a beautiful setting but the result tonight was an ugly 5-1 in Ajax’s favour.
The Hoops started the game well and should have opened the scoring when Maeda squared the ball to Yang, whose effort thundered against the crossbar from close range.
Ajax took the lead shortly after that missed chance, but Celtic soon drew level when Tierney played an exceptional through ball and Yang made no mistake on that occasion.
The first half was productive and close fought. The score at the break was level. The second 45 was very different.
Less than 2 minutes after the restart, Celtic trailed. Poor passing and defending was to blame on that occasion. That in itself was the order of the rest of the game – slack passing and players being given space to pick their spot.
Only Hatate had a good opportunity to score at the other end, but his attempt to give the goalkeeper the eyes didn’t quite come off.
Ajax added three further goals to round off a hammering, but fortunately pre season results count for little and the game gave Celtic players an opportunity to build fitness in what is their penultimate friendly prior to the league campaign commencing next weekend.
There was also positives in the sense that Carter-Vickers returned to the field after undergoing his recent treatment.
The Bhoys will now take on Al Ahly in the final Como Cup clash on Saturday evening.
