A short statement on their official x account from the south Ayrshire club this morning confirmed the news of the double sacking.
“Ayr United confirms that Scott Brown and Steven Whittaker have left the club by mutual consent.
“The club wishes to thank them both for their dedication throughout their time at Ayr United and wish them every success for their future careers.”
“Training today will be taken by Jamie Murphy, Tommy Tait, and Dave Timmins, and there will be further communication regarding an interim position in due course.”
In Scott Brown’s first season in charge of Ayr United he led them to a third place finish in the Championship, raising hopes that this season could see a real push for promotion back to the top flight of Scottish football for the first time since 1977.

However results have deteriorated with Ayr currently sitting in eighth place in what is a very competitive division this season. A 3-0 defeat at the hands of Raith Rovers on Friday night seems to have forced the Ayrshire club’s hand as in recent weeks the Ayr supporters have increasingly voiced their discontent with the management team.
Scott Brown leaves Ayr five points adrift of Neil Lennon’s Dunfermline who occupy the play-off position at the moment. But with results as bad as they’ve been the club seem to have been more concerned about the club’s chasing them in the Championship
Rather than looking upwards the Board may have looked over their shoulder with Ross County currently sitting in the relegation play-off spot now just seven points behind Ayr.
Scott Brown is a Celtic legend, with 22 major honours won at his time at the club including 10 Scottish Premiership titles, six Scottish Cups, and six League Cups. Post Celtic he has had a coaching role at Aberdeen and a managerial stint in England with Fleetwood Town before returning to Scotland and taking the Ayr job.
