Celtic 1-0 Rangers. Neil Lennon’s side were 15 points behind Rangers at one point in November, but Joe Ledley’s leaping header in the second half of this memorable encounter put Celtic remarkably two points ahead of their bitter rivals. It was the first time during the iconic 2011/2012 season Celtic had been top of the table. Admittedly, it was a scrappy Old Firm affair played in horrible conditions, but Celtic were unstoppable and had full momentum heading into 2012. The Hoops’ 1-0 victory over Rangers was their ninth straight league win. There was no looking back from these crucial three points for Celtic and the implosion that followed on the other side of the city was glorious. This would be the old clubs penultimate ever outing at Celtic Park. Post-match, Neil Lennon’s said, “it was the best Christmas and New Year I could have asked for. I kept believing in the players, and we’ve turned it around, although there is still a long way to go.”

Hibs 0-4 Celtic. A performance that was the perfect summation of the Ange Postecoglou regime — attacking, free-flowing and absolutely ruthless. Easter Road had been notoriously a tough place to go for Celtic for many a year under Rodgers and Lennon, and so to win convincingly was a nice change. It was the Hoops’ 12th straight league win courtesy of new fans favourite in Aaron Mooy who bagged a brace with Kyogo and Maeda also adding to the scoreline. Post-match saw the introduction of the new song sung by supporters, ‘Aaron, Aaron Mooy, Aaron, Aaron Mooy,’ to the 1976 classic, ‘Daddy Cool,’ by Boney M. Postecoglou’s reigning champions headed to Ibrox a few days later with the comforts of being nine points in front.

Celtic 4-2 Dunfermline. After signing from Dundee United the day prior for a sizeable fee of £650,000, David Hannah was substituted onto the field around the hour mark for Simon Donnelly to make his Hoops debut. Paul McStay also returned to the side for the first time following the Maestro’s serious knee injury in a League Cup outing in August. Dunfermline had the worst defensive record in the league by this point, therefore it was no surprise to see Celtic put four past the Pars thanks to Cadete’s double, with Van Hooijdonk and Donnelly also netting. Tommy Burns’ side had now won three straight league victories in the space of a week. Confidence within the squad was high with Ibrox approaching on 2 January 1997.

Celtic 2-0 Ross County. About as routine as it gets with Brendan Rodgers soon to be Invincibles team securing a 14th consecutive Scottish Premiership win through Erik Sviatchenko and Stuart Armstrong. Ryan Christie was praised for his performance in this encounter versus the Staggies. Domestically, Celtic’s 2-0 win at home to Ross County meant the five-in-a-row champions were unbeaten at home in the year 2016. The Hoops moved 16 points clear at the foot of the table with a game in hand with a trip to Ibrox looming. The league had been well and truly wrapped up, and focus was shifting towards winning a Treble for the first time since 2000/2001 season and maintaining that incredible unbeaten league start.
