The Champions League last-16 draw in Nyon on Friday set up Real Madrid v Manchester City, Barcelona v Newcastle and Atlético v Tottenham for 2025-26.
El Periódico Mediterráneo reports that Pep Guardiola will return to the Bernabéu for the second time this season, City having won 2-1 there in November when Xabi Alonso was in charge. Madrid are now led by Álvaro Arbeloa, with the first leg at the Bernabéu and the return away.
Barcelona will go back to St James’ Park, where Hansi Flick’s side won 2-1 in September in the opening game of the league phase. Barcelona will only be at home in the second leg of the last 16, not in the quarters or the semis.
The draw path means Barcelona would avoid a potential meeting with Real Madrid until the final. They could instead run into Atlético in the quarters, with any second leg at the Metropolitano.
Atlético must first get past Tottenham, who are 16th in the table, four points above the relegation zone, and recently appointed Igor Tudor.
The last 16 begins on Tuesday 10 March, with second legs on 17 and 18. The other ties are PSG v Chelsea, Liverpool v Galatasaray, Atalanta v Bayern, Bodo v Sporting and Leverkusen v Arsenal. The final is on 30 May in Budapest.
