An ending fitting of the match
Well it proved to be a frantic ending in what was all-in-all a frantic match.
Harvey Barnes thought he had sent Newcastle to Spain with a goal advantage, only for Lamine Yamal to level things up with the last kick of the game from the penalty spot.
Late, late drama at St James’!

FT | Atlético Madrid 5-2 Tottenham
A late clash of heads between João Palhinha and Cristian Romero in the Spanish capital delays the final whistle, but Tottenham are eventually condemned to a 5-2 defeat at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.Palhinha left the field and Spurs looked set to finish with 10 men, but Romero then required further assistance and the referee blew for full time.
Spurs fell behind early on and quickly collapsed, but improved as proceedings continued and stand a chance – albeit a slim one – of producing a stunning comeback in North London next week.

We’ll delve into this in more depth post-match once we’ve heard from Igor Tudor, but this really does feel like yet another turning point for Tottenham.
Their troubles this season have been well documented, and Tudor was appointed with the express goal of uniting a fractured squad and steering them to Premier League safety. Spurs were never in with a realistic chance of winning the Champions League, and so perhaps you could argue that this result is largely irrelevant, but what does bear significance is the Croatian’s attitude towards his players on the touchline.
The mood on the Tottenham bench is a somber one, and Tudor doesn’t exactly appear to have done much to improve it.

GOAL | Julián Álvarez
Tottenham play a corner short before ultimately working it into the box, forcing a fine save from Jan Oblak – but Spurs’ hard work is swiftly undone as Atléti launch a rapid counterattack.
Just 12 seconds separated Oblak’s save and Julián Álvarez’s tidy finish, with the Argentine running half the length of the pitch on his own after a beautiful flick from Antoine Griezmann in the buildup.

While we’ve got a relative lull in play compared to the frenetic start to the first half, I just want to touch upon Igor Tudor.
The interim Spurs boss didn’t so much as acknowledge Antonin Kinsky when he made the decision to haul the Champions League debutant off, just 16 minutes into tonight’s game. The 22-year-old Czech shotstopper trundled straight down the tunnel.
It was a nightmare debut, but you’ve got to feel for the lad.

By Oli Russell
📝 46′ 21:08
Ademola Lookman surges straight down the left flank and stabs a ball across the byline.

PLAYER RATINGS | Liverpool

By Rhys Webb
📝 20:56
First Half Thoughts
Chances were not hard to come by in the first half on Tyneside. However, a lack of clinical, cutting edge finishing and solid goal-keeping from both keepers means it remains level at 0-0.
Both sides have not been afraid to mix up their styles, with Newcastle in particular looking to turn their opponents around with balls in behind to wide players Barnes and Elanga.
Barca’s widemen also look dangerous with Raphina and Yamal a constant threat.
Don’t be surprised if it’s one of either side’s wingers that break the deadlock.
By Oli Russell
⏸️ HT 20:52
HT | Atlético Madrid 4-1 Tottenham
The referee blows his whistle, and Spurs have now got 15 minutes of much needed respite.
For want of a better word, it’s been an absolutely shambolic performance from the visitors.
Let’s try and sum it up quickly for those of you who are only just tuning in.
Igor Tudor’s men trailed by three goals within 15 minutes, substituted their goalkeeper, conceded again, scored a consolation, and were then lucky to keep all 11 men on the pitch after a rash challenge from Micky van de Ven.Have I missed anything?

HALF TIME

INCREDIBLE!
The flags are waving, the fans are cheering and the goals are absolutely flying in here in Madrid.
Despite their heavy advantage, Atléti are challenging for every ball and playing like it is 0-0!
Body language is huge in football, and if you didn’t know anything about football and made an assumption, you would think it was Diego Simeone’s side that is 4-1 down. The Argentine manager is going absolutely ballistic at his players – these standards can’t drop!
Igor Tudor is on a more relaxed approach, arms folded and head down.
If he is to get his first win as Spurs manager tonight then it would take some doing, but never say never…

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Alan Shearer revealed that he’s expecting goals aplenty at St James’ Park.

“If Newcastle get their system right tonight and I’m pretty sure they’ll play a lot of pace up front because that reason then I think they will cause them problems.
“But it’s at the other end that we have to try and keep them out. With the attacking talent that Barcelona have, that’s easier said than done.

They’ve gotten in each other’s way, that second chance for Florian Wirtz the only real moment of quality we’ve seen from them so far. Like we said, work to do.

Analysis: atmosphere proving tough again for Reds
Liverpool are now well acquainted with the atmosphere at Rams Park, and the deafening whistles from pretty much the entire stadium whenever Arne Slot’s side have the ball. A few months back, Mo Salah was seen cupping his ears on the touchline during their visit in the league phase, proving just how much of an effect it as on the players.
It’s been too frantic for the Reds’ liking so far, who need to stamp some authority on the game fast if they have any hope of silencing this raucous crowd. I’ve heard nothing quite like this before.
