Group D Drama as Super Eagles Crash Out Early
CHAN 2024 Sees Biggest Upset Yet as Sudan Floor Nigeria
Sudan pulled off the biggest shock of the CAF Africa Nations championship CHAN PAMOJA 2024 so far crushing Nigeria 4 - 0 in Zanzibar on Tuesday to climb to the top of Group D and send the Super Eagles home early.
Nigeria started brightly pressing high and forcing early corners. Anthony Ijoma thought he'd opened the scoring in the 22 minute but VAR ruled him offside.
Just 3 minute later, disaster struck as Abdel Raouf Yagoub’s shot bounced off the post and rebounded into the net off defender Leonard Ngenge for own goal.
The situation worsened for Nigeria in the 43 minute when Ngenge handled inside the box. Sudan captain Walieldin Khidir stepped up and smashed home the penalty to double the lead before halftime.
In the 2nd half Kwesi Appiah’s men showed no mercy. Yagoub extended the advantage in the 55 minute with calm finish then struck again 7 minute later after being set up by Musa Hussein.
Goalkeeper Mohamed Abooja kept clean sheet with key saves including late header from Stephen Manyo and stoppage time shot from Raymond Tochukwu that hit the post.
The victory puts Sudan level on 4 point with defending champions Senegal ahead on goal difference. Congo sit 3rd with 2 point while Nigeria are bottom without point from 2 game.
