Charlie Crew is set to cut short his season-long loan at Doncaster Rovers and return to Leeds United next week, according to Leeds Live.
The 19-year-old defensive midfielder featured on Leeds’ pre-season tour and made his full Wales debut in September’s 1-0 loss to Canada, but club minutes have dwindled since.
Two of his five league starts came in the opening two League One matches. He then played no league minutes from late September to the end of November, although he had 16 minutes against Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup.
This month he supplied his first assist in a 4-3 defeat to Cardiff City, having started the 2-0 loss to Stockport County four days earlier, but he was omitted from the last two squads.
Across 11 outings, only seven in the league, he has completed just two full 90s. That is fewer than the 13 League Two appearances he made for Doncaster in the second half of last season’s title run-in.
Crew is one of four players set to return to parent clubs once the January window opens. Rovers boss Grant McCann said his spell had been stop-start and international breaks had not helped, that he had probably not matched last year’s levels, and that he and Tottenham Hotspur loanee Damola Ajayi need to play, so Rovers will let them go and look to replace.
Crew’s only competitive senior appearance for Leeds came against Plymouth Argyle in the Championship in November 2024. Meanwhile, academy forward Connor Douglas has joined Buxton on a youth loan to the end of the season, having made 14 under-21s appearances and able to cover midfield and full-back.
