Chelsea and West Ham have been fined after a mass confrontation during their Premier League match at Stamford Bridge in January.
Hounslow Herald reports that an independent regulatory commission fined Chelsea £325,000 and West Ham £300,000 after both clubs admitted failing to ensure their players behaved in an orderly manner.
The flashpoint came in the 95th minute of Chelsea’s 3-2 comeback win on 31 January, when West Ham winger Adama Traore shoved Marc Cucurella, prompting a reaction from Joao Pedro.
Almost 20 players became involved and West Ham’s Jean-Clair Todibo was shown a straight red card for grabbing Joao Pedro by the neck.
In its written reasons, the commission judged Traore’s response disproportionate but said Cucurella was not free of blame, indicating he sought to draw a reaction after regaining his feet.
Chelsea’s larger fine reflects their poorer disciplinary record, with this the club’s third breach of FA Rule E20.1 this season. The panel also criticised three Chelsea players for trying to incite the home crowd during the disorder, saying there was no justification regardless of the match context.
Both clubs were warned over future conduct, with prior offences central to the severity of the penalties. The result remains unchanged, and the fines signal a firm stance on mass player confrontations.
