Blues were open to cashing in on midfielder if the price was right
Standard Sport understands that Man United have agreed to pay £48million plus an additional £2m in performance-related add-ons that are viewed as easily achievable.
A medical is being booked for Santos as the Brazilian prepares to complete his move to Old Trafford.
Standard Sport revealed on Tuesday that Santos, who while appreciated by Chelsea, was open to a move elsewhere this summer in search of regular first-team minutes.
Moises Caicedo’s contract extension meant that Santos was likely to remain as the Ecuadorian’s understudy next season, leaving the 22-year-old to explore his options.
Chelsea wanted to keep Santos, but did not view the Brazilian as untouchable and were open to a sale if the price was right.

Man Utd have been expected to revamp their midfield this summer and a deal for Santos will be a part of that process after missing out on Mateus Fernandes to Tottenham in a deal worth £85m.
With Ederson also set to arrive from Atalanta, it remains to be seen if United recruit a third midfielder before the transfer window closes amid links to Ayyoub Bouaddi among others.
Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni is another player apparently on United's shortlist, but Real Madrid are reluctant to sell the Frenchman, who remains an important part of their plans, and are expected to demand a fee of at least €100m (£85m) if they are to consider offers.
Felix Nmecha is said another option, but Borussia Dortmund value the 25-year-old at around €120m (£103m).
