Chelsea boss Maresca backs Bayern as Champions League favourites | OneFootball

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has backed Bayern Munich as ‘one of the three or four favourites’ to win the Champions League this season.

Maresca’s side face Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena this evening in their opening fixture of the Champions League campaign. Chelsea are aiming to build on last season’s Conference League win and their summer triumph at the FIFA Club World Cup.

However, Maresca is keen to take one game at a time, particularly given the West London side’s tough start.

The Italian believes Bayern, who reclaimed the German title last season and have reached at least the Champions League quarter-finals in six straight seasons, are one of the best sides in the competition.

Bayern have opened the season with five consecutive wins in all competitions, including a 5-0 thrashing of Hamburg at the weekend. England captain Harry Kane has been in prolific goalscoring form, netting eight times already this season.

“First of all, you know since last season, I always like to go game by game,’ explained Maresca. ‘You cannot think about the final or semi-final if you can’t win games in the group stage.

“Tomorrow we have the first one against a fantastic team. One of the three or four favourites in this competition, but we are going to try to do our job in the best way.

“I think Bayern Munich is a team that showed last year that they are very close. They can compete to win this competition. This is my view.

“I see them together with three or four more clubs as one of the favourites for this competition.”
