After a real flurry earlier in the week, things have been a little quieter on the Renato Veiga transfer front in the last 48 hours. But this evening we’ve had an update on the defender’s future.

Patrick Berger – who is well connected in terms of German football – says that Borussia Dortmund (who have always been the strongest linked to Veiga) have submitted an official loan offer to Chelsea today.

Crucially, the loan has an option to buy. Dortmund would pay all of his €4m salary and a loan fee to take him until the summer. Chelsea are said to be “evaluating the offer.”

If Veiga goes, we want to be able to replace him right away. We don’t want to scramble for another backup left back in the next two weeks, only to end up with Veiga returning to crowd things in the summer. We want a definitive answer about his future, one way or the other.

Veiga situation remains unclear as all parties have different demands and desires

Things are pretty confusing around Veiga, and this hasn’t cleared things up at all. Why does he want to leave? Why do Chelsea want to sell? It was made even less clear by Fabrizio Romano’s report that Veiga only wants a loan and not a permanent move. Which is presumably the opposite of Chelsea’s thinking.

We’re not sure Dortmund’s option to buy will move the needle. That gives them the power – they either need to commit to a loan with a compulsory purchase (perhaps triggered by certain achievements) or make a permanent bid, or forget it.

The plan to put Reece James or Malo Gusto at right back might just about tide us over until the summer, but Chelsea surely aren’t thinking of letting Veiga go without a replacement longer term.
